The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
