Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting locations in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or are in custody.”
