The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices a demand to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
