Approximately 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.

Law enforcement report they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.

The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.

Officers then located multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement state early analysis indicate the substance was probably blood from a person.

"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.

Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.

A high-ranking representative commented the attack made him speechless and required to be addressed promptly.

"This event hits the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a shooter targeting residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
